In 6H we love to read!

It has been a great start to Year 6 for the children of 6H. Everybody has settled back into school life seamlessly and we are working extremely hard and looking forward to the challenges ahead.

In maths, this half term, we have been focusing on place value and number. The children have ordered and solved problems with numbers up to 1 million; we have answered questions with negative numbers and dealt with calculation methods for addition and subtraction, including 2 step word problems. The children are really enjoying the times table challenges that we set for them throughout the week and is it important that the children keep practising their target times table at home.

In English, we have been focusing on narrative and have recently finished writing some amazing 'flashback stories' based on the short story, 'Kidnapped' by Pie Corbett. We were very impressed with the children's creativity, ideas and vocabulary choices. Next week we will start a short unit on poetry which will culminate in writing imagery poems about Autumn.

Our first topic of the year is titled, 'A Long Time Ago' and we have begun by learning all about the Mayan Civilisation of Central America. We have looked at where the Maya came from, their achievements, the daily life in a city and the reasons why they were able to survive and flourish. Next week the children will be designing and making their own Mayan Masks. Reminder: Mayan homework projects should be completed and brought back into school by Monday 17th September.

A few weeks ago we sent home a letter with details about our year 6 residential to Llandudno. This residential will take place from Tuesday 16th to Friday 19th May (3 nights). The cost will be approximately £175. Please ensure that you return the reply slip to indicate that you would like your child to go on the trip and a £50 non-refundable deposit is required by 25th November.

Mr Hints (7th October 2016)

Our RE topic is Common Good. We will talk about the work of the worldwide Christian family.

The Big Question

How can we work together to build a just and fair world?

Meet the children of 6H!
