A big welcome to all our children who have started Reception at St Christopher's after the summer break. We are delighted with how well the children have settled into RDH.

Like all other Early Years Settings we use the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2023 and Development Matters 2023. This can be found at:

Summer term

Communication and language

Literacy

      Write short sentences with words with known sound-letter correspondences using a capital letter and full stop.

     Re-read what they have written to check that it makes sense.

Spring 2026

This term we will be focusing on the books 'Juniper Jupiter' and 'Little Red'. These books help spark children's imagination and story telling. 

Below you will see what we will be covering in each area of the curriculum. 

Communication and Language - Ask questions. Develop story language and understanding of stories. 

PSED - Develop resilience and perseverance skills. Understand the importance of being healthy.

Physical - Use a range of tools competently, safely and confidently-scissors, pencils, tools. PE - Dance- dinosaurs, Develop ball skills and Parachute games. 

Literacy - Read some letter groups that each represent one sound and say sounds for them. Reread these books to build up their confidence in word reading, their fluency and understanding and enjoyment. Spell words by identifying the sounds with letters. To tell and write sentences around a theme (traditional tales) To instruct through the stories 'Little Red' and 'Juniper Jupiter'.

Maths - Subitising, shape, comparing number, more/less through the schemes - Mastering number and White Rose Hub.

Understanding of the World - Celebrations and beliefs, Special places, Comment on and compare figures and characters from the past. Science - Changes in winter observe through outdoor provision changes that are happening and clothing that is needed. Extend to look at animals in cold climate. Animal detectives - follow on from desert to jungle going into more depth with animal classification. 

EAD- Develop stories in their pretend play. Use tools and build for a purpose. Build on prior learning to be creative. Work collaboratively. 

Independent Learners

In Reception we encourage our children to be independent learners. We encourage them to choose activities, tidy up after themselves, access snack and dress and undress independently - this is something we support initially. We ask that you support us by encouraging your child to become more independent at home e.g. dressing and undressing, helping with jobs around the house. 

Phonics

In Reception, we teach phonics daily.  We follow 'Read Write Inc'. Phonics is the learning and application of the letters and sounds children need in order to read and write. Phonics is split into groups based on children's development. Information can be found in the link below.

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning is an important part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum so the children spend a lot of time outside. On sunny days please ensure your child has sun cream, a cap and a water bottle. As the weather gets colder please ensure your child has a suitable coat, hat, scarf, gloves etc. Thank you.

PE

PE takes place on a Friday.  Children will require  a school PE kit, which should be labelled.

The school PE kit is available from Lazer School Wear, St Mary's Road in Garston. This is a red t shirt with the school badge and school shorts. However your child can also wear a plain red t-shirt and dark blue shorts that are available from most supermarkets. The children can wear any training shoes for PE. 

This is part of our school uniform and must be worn for PE lessons.

Football kits and other sportswear will not be allowed. 

Book Bags

Children will read in class and we would encourage you to read with them daily at home. Children will be given a reading for pleasure book to share at home each Friday and once they have practiced a Read Write Inc text in school this will also be sent home for consolidation. Oxford Owl have put an online library on their website if you need extra reading materials.

Initially the book they will bring home will be a book to share to read for pleasure, once they have some basic reading skills read write inc books will also be sent out and homework linked to this will also be accessible via Oxford owl-login details are in the front of your child's reading record.

Water bottle

Your child can bring water into school in a water bottle with a sports cap. The bottles need to be labelled with your child's name.

Class Dojo

As a way of communicating with families we have sent you an email invitation to join our class Dojo page.  This platform allows you to see when we reward your child with a monster point and set homework challenges to complete.  If you have not received your invitation please inform a member of staff of your up to date email address so we can resend it.

Homework

  Initially homework will be sent home in your child's keyworker book and will involve school readiness activities. as the children develop their reading, writing and maths skills other forms of homework with books, worksheets and online learning will also be available.
