Maths at St-Christopher's

WHY TEACH MATHEMATICS?

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.”

OUR SCHOOL AIMS IN MATHEMATICS

The mathematics teaching at our school is geared towards enabling each pupil to develop within their capabilities; not only the mathematical skills and understanding required for later life, but also an enthusiasm and fascination about mathematics itself.

We aim to help the pupils to:

  • Understand the nature and purpose of mathematics in everyday life
  • Develop confidence and competence with numbers and the number system
  • Develop the ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts
  • Develop practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented
  • Explore features of shape and space and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts.
  • Develop financial understanding and capabilities as life skills.
  • Develop confidence in using and applying mathematics and to learn to enjoy its challenges
  • Be able to communicate their findings and reasoning in mathematical contexts

We are continually aiming to raise the standards of achievement of the pupils in our school.
